The number one question I get asked as a photographer is: what’s the best time of year for senior photos in Houston?
Listen, if you want to optimize senior year and schedule your senior photos at the best possible time, you need to ask yourself two questions:
- Are my photos due to the school on a deadline?
- Is there a specific season I want captured in my photos?
Are your photos due to the school on a deadline?
If your photos are due to the school for yearbook purposes, your next step is to find out when that deadline is. You can do this by reaching out to the admin office or the lead teacher of the journalism department.
Once you know the due date, schedule your senior portraits to take place 2-3 months before the deadline.
It’s always good to schedule out earlier than you would think. Illness or bad weather play a huge part in delaying photo deliveries. Schedule early so you don’t miss your deadline.
If there is no deadline for the yearbook, then move on to question number 2:
Is there a specific season you want captured in your photos?
If so, the next step is to book your photographer 1-2 months before that season starts so that your date will be available and so you’ll have wiggle room in case of a reschedule for illness or weather.
You might see a trend here: the trick to scheduling your senior photos at the best possible time is to schedule early in the year. When you reach out to your photographer early, you are more likely to get the date and season that you want for your photos.

My favorite season to take photos in Houston? It’s fall. October and November are the premium months to schedule your senior photos. The weather is perfect for either a fall look or a spring, beachtime look. And the fall is when you are more relaxed when it comes to photos.
